Women’s
rights according § 35 in the 1995 Etiopian constitution
RIGHTS OF ETHIOPIAN WOMEN
(ARTICLE
35 IN THE 1995 CONSTITUTION)
1.
Women shall have equal
right and protection as men.
2.
Women have equal rights
with men in marriage.
3.
Women will compete and
participate on the basis of equality with men in political, social and
economic life as well as in public and private institutions.
4.
The State shall enforce
the right of women to eliminate the influences of harmful customs.
5.
Women have right to
maternity leave with full pay.
6.
Women have the right to
acquire, administer, control, use and transfer property, especially of
land. They shall also enjoy equal treatment in the inheritance of
property.
7.
Women shall have a right
to equality in employment, promotion, pay and pension.
To prevent harm arising from
pregnancy and childbirth women have the right of access to health,
family planning, education, information and capacity.

Institute and Centre.

WMCO is arranging courses at the
Women’s Institute and Centre in cooperation with the Mekane Yesus
Management and Leadership college This program gives different
kinds of training on certificate and diploma levels.

To encourage women to take
active part in congregations in evangelization, Christian education
and social service
-
To nurture spiritual growth so
that Christian women can be living witnesses at home and in their
communities
-
To equip women with basic
leadership skills in view of promoting their participation in the
leadership of the Church
After a one year course in leadership
the women are participating in giving one month courses in their
respective synods. Many of them are working as parish women
coordinators.

Women´s Forum
To promote
understanding of the national and global community Women forums are
arranged. The aim is to create self-awareness among women regarding
their human rights and to increase their self esteem to speak up for
themselves. The forums also work toward financial self-support of the
women’s work in the EECMY through micro finance institutions and to
encourage literacy work among women, especially in rural areas. These
forums also encourage women to take active part in peace building in
church and society.
