Diaconia and HIV/AIDS mainstreaming 2nd
National Consultation at Bonita Youth Centre – at Bishoftu town,
March 14-15, 2008
The two main operational wings of the
EEECMY, DMT and DASSC held a two days joint consultation for leaders,
program staff and invited guests, on how to strengthen their
collaborative work of Diaconia program of DMT and HIV/AIDS program of
DASSC on the mainstreaming of the HIV/AIDS in the life and work of the
church throughout its structure.

Listening attentively to the briefings on mainstreaming HIV/AIDS
In this 2nd national
consultation, it was recalled that the EECMY took a leading role and
boldly faced the new challenge of the time posed by the HIV virus and
took initiative in raising awareness, curbing its spread and care and
support to the affected citizens since 1988. Much has been done, yet
more intensive efforts are still expected from the church for sometime
to come. The 1st national consultation dealing with this
issue was held during July 26 -28, 2006, and this is a follow-up
for review of accomplishments and recommend further action for enhanced
mainstreaming in which congregations play a central role and leaders at
different levels become a role model in the fight against the virus and
care for the affected citizens.

Participants
discussing in groups
The participants
shared ideas and experiences from the Ethiopian Catholic Secretariat (ECS)
represented by Sr. Mahdere Tedla and from Dr. Henok Gebre Hiwot
representing the Kale Hiwot Church. It is expected to review and analyse
the past practical experiences of the above mentioned mainstreaming
services and make further strategic input, on how to strengthen the work
of Diakonia and HIV/AIDS ministry at all levels of the EECMY structure.
Finally, the participants carried out small group discussions and
reported their findings and recommendations to the plenary which will be
further deliberated on by DMT and DASSC in order to come up with a
feasible way forward |
