EECMY five years Strategic Plan workshop

Rev.Dr. Berhanu Ofga'a the General Secretary of the church, in his introductory speech indicated that this workshop was arranged to discuss on the implementation of the five years (2013-2017) Strategic Plan of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus. He further indicated that the draft document of this plan that had been under study in the last two years was approved by the 8th council of the church to be implemented as of January 1, 2013. According to this plan the church has envisioned to share the Word of God with 30 million un-reached people during the five years period.

Rev.Dr. Berhanu Ofga’a welcomed the participants of this workshop from the various units of the church: church leaders and management committee members, Synod presidents, executive secretaries, DMT directors, joint program directors and other staffs of the church on the central office level. He also introduced the invited professionals to deliver presentation on this workshop: Miss Ruth Osmundsen and Ato Tilahun Seyfu who reviewed the frame work of the strategic plan, Ato Semaw Mekonnen the consultant of the SP, and Ato Iyasu Tegicho invited speaker from the Hawassa Tabor Mekane Yesus Congregation. Following this the Rev. Dereje Jemberu, the vice president of the church officially opened the workshop.

This operational planning workshop based on the strategic plan was held at Gudina Tumsa Wolistic Training Center, from August 20-21, 2012. The main aim of this workshop was to enable the participants work on the operational plan. Presentations on methodologies and techniques of designing the operational plan have been delivered by different speakers.

Ruth and Tilahun

Accordingly Miss Ruth Osmundsen and Ato Tilahun Seyfu who worked on the review of this plan, re clustering the objectives and distributing the expected outputs during the five years to the units of the church, presented their findings and recommendations to the participants. In their presentation they insisted on grounding this strategic plan on the principle of the wholistic Ministry of the church which is “serving the whole person”. Next, Ato Iyasu Tegicho of Hawassa Tabor Mekane Yesus Congregation delivered presentation on the experience of the congregation. The Hawassa Tabor Mekane Yesus Congregation has played an exemplary role in launching a strategic plan and achieving great accomplishments. The Tabor congregation started 16 years ago, has demonstrated spectacular growth as a result of its operation through strategic plan. Ato Iyasu indicated that this congregation has gone so far through third round SP implementation. Ato Iyasu expounded in his share of experience the importance of SP in the Congregational work.

Group discussion

The workshop involved group discussions for experience sharing and also to get additional inputs from the participants taking into account the contexts of the different Synods. As it was explored in the report of the group works, the workshop in general has contributed much towards the fulfillment of its goal, equipping the participants to own the SP and enabling them to develop deep insight of the know how of preparing their operational plan going to their respective congregations, parishes and preaching places.

The participants finally expressed their commitment to work out the operational plan and report to the office of the General Secretary before Oct 30, 2012.
